Childbirth Injury, The Law and Perinatal Safety has been designed for OB/GYNs, perinatologists, neonatologists, nurses, nurse practitioners and certified nurse midwives who provide labor, delivery, perinatal and neonatal care, as well as for medical malpractice attorneys and risk managers interested in childbirth injury, the law and perinatal safety. This comprehensive conference will provide relevant instruction on a mosaic of medical-legal topics and perinatal safety issues. Lectures will focus on strategies to reduce maternal, fetal or neonatal injuries and improve perinatal and neonatal care. To achieve the dual goals of improving patient care and minimizing patient errors, practicing effective risk reduction strategies and understanding of the legal process are two critical ingredients. Up-to date clinical topics such as how to establish a hospitalist program for your labor and delivery unit, the perinatal risks associated with maternal obesity, proper obstetrical documentation, second stage of labor risks, and the role of magnesium sulfate in the prevention of cerebral palsy will be presented. Important sessions on oxytocin usage, maternal sleep apnea and the fetal inflammatory response syndrome will also be included. Case studies will be presented on the brain damaged baby, OB catastrophes, and maternal death and will serve as vehicles to provide insights on ways to improve perinatal safety and assist the members of the perinatal - neonatal team in understanding the application of legal principles to their practice of medicine. During in-depth topic presentations, question/answer sessions with the faculty, and panel discussions, participants will gain familiarity with recent scientific data on maternal, fetal and neonatal injury. Faculty members, each one with special expertise in childbirth related injuries and perinatal safety have been carefully selected to enrich each participant's understanding of childbirth injury and the law. The schedule has been arranged to permit time for academics, collegial networking, and relaxation.
