Intrapartum Fetal Monitoring – An Overview
is designed for physicians, nurses, risk managers, and medical malpractice
attorneys who daily confront issues in the interpretation and management
of FHR patterns. This course will examine the cutting edge skills
necessary to recognize, interpret, and manage a variety of FHR patterns
commonly associated with fetal brain injury and death. Topics include
maternal and fetal assessment on admission to the hospital, intrapartum
fetal heart rate patterns, intrauterine fetal resuscitation, and
the medical-legal minefields associated with perinatal fetal monitoring.
Method of Participation in the Learning Process:
Intrapartum Fetal Monitoring – An Overview
is a self-paced, Internet accessible CME course comprised of four
integrated learning modules. There are three (3) quizzes, one after
each of the first three modules, and a short comprehensive final
examination after Module 4. A final examination score of 80% or
better is required to receive credit for the course. The estimated
time to complete the course is three (3) hours. Time requirements
may vary among individuals.
Course participants who attain a score of less than 80% on the final
examination will be given a second opportunity to take the test
to satisfy the course requirements. If a final examination score
of 80% or better is not attained through the second test administration,
the course participant must recycle through the entire course, including
all quizzes and the final examination, to obtain the requisite passing
score. There is no additional charge to the participant who finds
it necessary to recycle.
Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify complex FHR patterns and discuss appropriate nursing
and medical management.
- Use admission FHR and fetal movement characteristics to risk
manage patients during labor.
- Define true intrapartum fetal distress.
- Describe the role of intrauterine fetal resuscitation in “fetal
distress.”
- Identify medical-legal issues related to antepartum and intrapartum
fetal monitoring.
- Improve documentation during labor.
- List the three most common FHR patterns associated with fetal
brain injury.
